INTERSTELLAR : A GOOD REPRESENTATION OF THE FUTURE ?

Interstellar is a science fiction movie released in 2014 and directed by Christopher Nolan, it’s the perfect example of what could happen in the future if we do nothing. This story is science fiction but it might not be so far from reality or at least to a future reality.

The decline of humanity

To have a better representation of what could happen in the future if we do nothing, I chose a film : Interstellar. This movie is a science fiction film released in 2014 and directed by Christopher Nolan. The story is a dystopia of the Earth in the future. It perfectly represents the fears I said in the previous article. A world where people closed their eyes until it was too late to change anything. A world so polluted that a layer of dust has spread into the atmosphere. Nothing grows except corn. The last survivors of humanity have become farmers. Exhausting the last resources of the Earth and breathing air polluted by dust.

Storm of dust

A population on the verge of extinction. A society that still benefits from the utilitarian aspect of nature without seeing its beauty. In this chaos we follow a former NASA pilot living with his children in a farm. One day he is enlisted by what’s left of NASA for a mission. This mission: save humanity by living Earth to search a new habitable planet. During his journey he will discover new virgin worlds where nature reigns supreme. But will he be able to see his children again one day, knowing that time does not run the same on these other planets? History focuses on this duality between saving humanity without ever seeing its children or seeing its children without being able to save humanity.

A real dystopia

But this future allows us to realize the consequences of global warming. If we do nothing, it is in this world that our future children and all the generations that follow us, will live. The longer we wait to act, the closer this dystopia becomes. We have to be ready to sacrifice some things if we want to save those we love. That’s the other central theme of the film: love.

" Of all the things we perceive, love is the only things that transcends temporal and spatial dimensions. "

It also makes it possible to realize that even if we will be dead before living in such a world, we must think of those we love. By thinking about loving we can also feel empathy for all these families who are already suffering the consequences of global warming every day. And to all these future families that this film will be a reality. So yes this story may seem pure fiction yet this is not the case. Some countries are currently experiencing the consequences of global warming and are seeing the consequences every day (see next article).
