ICELAND AGAINST THE GLOBAL WARMING
If you are still not sure of what is happening, I chose a more concrete example. Iceland is one of many countries already affected by the consequences of global warming with an ice surface contracting from year to year. This country is a perfect example of what we can fear for the future.
" Land of fire and ice "
We might think that the consequences of global warming only exist in science fiction movies like Interstellar. However it’s not true, some consequences are already visible now and will be even more visible in the future. To realize this, I chose to present Iceland. This country spans over 200,000 km². And where more than 300,000 people live every day. Iceland is not part of the European Union. But this country is linked to other countries by other organizations like NATO or UN. Every year many tourists come to enjoy the beauty of this country with its grandiose landscapes. Iceland is also famous for its total change of landscape and its rich biodiversity. On this island nature reigns supreme and offers sumptuous shows between the warmth of volcanoes and the cold of ice. This is the origine of its nickname " land of fire and ice ". These landscapes will also serve for the famous film Interstellar (see previous article).
This country is also very important today for its position towards global warming.
A country in danger
Indeed, Iceland could change dramatically in the future. This is one of the global warming consequences that everyone is talking about: the melting of glaciers. In a country who is form largely by ice like Iceland, this could be dramatic. This phenomenon has been going on for decades. Since the year 2000, the lost ice surface has been enormous and this could worsen in the future. Recent studies suggest that within 200 to 300 years there may be no ice in Iceland at all.
" Recent studies suggest that within 200 to 300 years there may be no ice in Iceland at all. "
Biodiversity could radically change and many species could disappear. No more grandiose landscapes either. Nothing except desolation. But it could also profoundly impact the people of this island. If biodiversity changes, human habits will inevitably change. Not the same food. Not the same land to evolve. Everything the country is based on right now could die with the glaciers.
That’s not all, if this phenomenon can impact Iceland it is only the visible part of the iceberg. As the glaciers melt, they dump icebergs into the ocean, which contributes to rising sea levels. As a result, all coastal populations around the world could be affected.
